Banking executives share 2022 predictions

Arizent/American Banker surveyed 175 bankers last October on a range of topics, including the economy, regulation, technology, innovation, competitors and consumer behavior.

Key Findings

  • Economic Recovery: Only one-third of all banks predict a full recovery in the second half of 2022. Nearly half, or 44%, don’t predict recovery until 2023.

  • M&A: Dealmaking appetite remains strong. One in four financial institutions plans to buy or be acquired by a competitor next year.

  • IT Spend: More than eight in 10 banks expect their tech spending to increase moderately or significantly in 2022.

  • Big Tech: Nearly half of those surveyed said they expect big tech companies to be a “major competitor” in the next three years.

  • Branches: 38% of executives surveyed expect “some reduction” in their number of branches or to “substantially shrink” their physical locations next year.
